History

Atlanta, GA
So why create a blog? Well, those close to me know how passionate I am about my food...eating food, to be more precise. 15 years ago I discovered the joy of dining in restaurants which boast a unique ambiance and delicious food. I first started tracking lists of great restaurants when I lived in Columbus, OH in the mid 90's. I was fortunate to dine at Cameron Mitchell's, Fifty-Five, Bravo, Rigsby's, Barcelona, and many more. I read in local newspapers about the best Places to be Seen, to Celebrate, to Impress, etc. and formulated my "to try" list. This hobby continued in Birmingham, AL and again when my travels brought me to Atlanta, GA ten years ago. I started a Supper Club with close friends in 2000, trying a new restaurant every Thursday night. We had one simple rule in the club, “no chain restaurants”! After three years of stomping through Atlanta's best and worst restaurants, we realized that this weekly tradition was becoming too expensive to maintain (go figure!). However, in 2005 I started making notes of my dining experiences for personal reference. To make it easy for my friends to get my recommendations, I thought I would try blogging. So...here goes!

8.5 Overall Rating - Taki Japanese Steakhouse 09/19/10

Atlanta, GA 30338

Located just north of Perimeter Mall in the Walmart shopping center, next to Viceroy

This location has been opened for approximately eight months. After a long day in the sun and playing against a full slate of solid competition in Amber's Acceleration Fitness Last Blast women's sand volleyball tournament, I had developed a full appetite and was ready to dive into a hefty dinner! Greg got up at the crack of dawn, stayed at the courts most of the day to support me and was also ready for a well-deserved meal. Taki was just right for both us!

Ambiance: 10
We were pleasantly surprised by the beatiful decor, dark wood accents, warm lighting and stone walls throughout the restaurant. We ate in the back hibachi area where they had six large hibachi tables. The corridor leading to the hibachi area was lined with a wine bottle display, fit for your trendy seeker. The restaurant was nicely appointed with leather or faux leather modern style soft seating throughout. The restrooms were furnished with up-to-date fixtures and was well-kept.

Food Quality: 8
The salad dressing was very good; sweeter than some people may like it, but we really enjoyed it. The miso soup was average.

I've never been offered garlic butter to add directly on top of my fried rice, but this place offered and I would highly recommend accepting this if you like garlic and if you're not on a date! Their yummy sauce isn't as good as Lee's Golden Buddha & Mo Mo Ya's, but the ginger sauce is almost as good as anywhere I've been, yet lighter in flavor. As a finishing touch, they gave the entire table a sample of their noodles which were quite tasty (again, on the sweeter side). Greg ordered the shrimp and steak hibachi meal; I ordered the NY strip hibachi meal. Portion sizes were generous (you gotta like that!)

Service: 9
Friendly staff, our chef was accommodating to special requests made by others at our table.

Value: $61 for two entrees and two teas. Entrees came w/soup, salad, two shrimp, rice and vegetables
Prices are probably comparable to Benihana and Lee's Golden Buddha & Mo Mo Ya

Greg and I first dined here on August 22.

We returned with our book club on September 12 after an afternoon at the movies watching Eat, Pray, Love - Laura, Sheila, TJo, Marilyn, Christy, Rich and Greg.

Ambiance: 7
This restaurant was surprisingly nice even though it's located in the Dunwoody Wal-Mart strip mall. Tables were covered w/white tablecloths and the lighting was soft. The one drawback was the white tile floors which left the dining room feeling a little cold versus adding warmth to the room.

Food Quality: 8
Chicken curry was delicious - tender meat, perfectly spiced orange curry

Arrived at 9:20 on Sunday. Restaurant closes at 10p. When the hostess sat us, I noticed our waiter walk by our table and he immediately checked his watch. The initial service was a bit unfriendly, but our server seemed to warm up throughout service. We ordered the "dinner for 2", complete with vegetable samosa, garlic naan, chicken and shrimp tandoori, chicken curry and vegetable malaie kofta. For dessert, they gave us ras malai (delicate cheese patties in flavored cream milk - interesting, but would not order it again). After the appetizer, two other servers appeared and we received frequent stops at the table to explain dishes and check on our meal. Food was prepped quickly and service was very efficient.

When we commented about their promptness, one of the servers said, "we close at 10". Although he smiled, we could tell that they were dead serious about closing at 10p. There were 4-5 other tables when we arrived and by the time we received our check, there was just one other table. The primary server came by to pick up the check before I had a chance to get my credit card...they were obviously in a hurry to get us out of there. When we finally left, I looked at the time and we followed the last table out the door at exactly 10:01!

Service improved on the second visit. Our reservation was at 7:30, so I'm sure this made a difference for the staff! Generally, their servers aren't very friendly, although they are attentive. The owner was more friendly and stopped by the table once or twice to check on us.

If you have a moment, allow me to share a little history regarding the Book Club dinner experience. Eat, Pray, Love is a story about a woman's experience in Italy, India and Bali. We thought it would be great to see the movie and then eat at an Indonesian restaurant. I had been researching Indonesian restaurants online for a month or two and found it to be a bit challenging because there aren’t too many restaurants specializing in “Indonesian” food. Some of the searches pulled up restaurants that have since gone out of business, so just when I thought I found the perfect place for us, I would later realize that the posts were 3-4 years old and then stumble across another website confirming that the restaurant was closed.

I was, however, finally able to identify 5-6 different Indonesian restaurants in the greater Atlanta area. One night after work, I convinced a co-worker to join me for dinner so that I could try one of the Indonesian restaurants before dragging all of the book club friends there. Well, we turned up at Nelayan which received pretty decent reviews on UrbanSpoon. Unfortunately, the door was locked and the window blinds were closed. We managed to peer through a crack and could tell that the place was completely empty.

We then drove to another location which was only a mile away from the 1st place we tried…only to discover that there was no sign of an Indonesian restaurant existing at that address. We then tried a 3rd place and somehow ended up on Roswell Road/Riverside Drive and could have driven ourselves right into the river if we would have followed the GPS directions! You would have thought that I’d be smart enough to call ahead to the restaurants after the 1st attempt….but I didn’t figure this out until after 3 attempts and only after my co-worker suggested that we call ahead before driving any further (doh!). I called the next two places on my list and was able to connect with someone on the other end of the line, so alas, I confirmed that these two places were still in business!

So with my co-worker caravanning behind me after an hour+ of touring through Alpharetta and Roswell, we drove another 30 minutes and found ourselves in T-Jo’s neck of the woods…some Hong Kong Market in Norcross! We located the shopping plaza…but would you believe that we couldn’t find the restaurant to save our lives?!? We drove through the entire parking lot, even circled behind the building and got a beautiful view of their dumpsters and back entrances….I have no idea where that place was, so we ended up eating at a little Thai restaurant because we were absolutely starving and exhausted by this point.

After dinner, with one last option on my list, I had this “not-so-bright” idea to do a “drive-by” after dinner before heading home. Batavia received good ratings on UrbanSpoon; however, a few reviewers commented that the location was “shady”, so I had kept this place as a last resort for us. Plus, judging from the online pictures, this place looked more like a cafeteria. Batavia is located on Chamblee Dunwoody, west of Buford Hwy…and boy, they weren’t kidding about this place being shady. There were a bunch of guys sitting around the parking lot and as soon as I pulled into the lot, several of them started walking toward my car. I found Batavia, of course it was at the back of this 2-story, run-down commercial building. When you see window security bars on every window, that should be a good sign to leave right away, especially when it’s after 10 o’clock at night and a handful of guys are walking toward you…so that’s just what I did!

So, to my disappointment, I couldn't find a Bali-like restaurant for us to try. We decided to enjoy Indian food which is how we ended up at Viceroy. As it turned out, it was more conveniently located to the movie theater and we ended up having a great time!

I didn't go inside so I can't comment on the interior; however it looked pretty nice. The tables were covered with white tablecloths. The evening was too perfect to pass up with temperatures dropping into the mid-70's.

Food Quality: 8
Appetizers were mediocre. Ordered the sampler which came with the Shirazi Salad, Kash-O-Bademjan, Mirza Qasemi and Dolmeh (Stuffed grape leaves). The shirazi salad was bland, the grape leaves were peculiar; however, the eggplant was delicious.

For our entree, Greg and I split the sirloin kabob, barberry chicken rice dish and a side of vegetable kabob. Dinner was fantastic. The barberries added an unexpected tart flavor to the otherwise buttery and savory rice and chicken dish. It was a nice complement to the sirloin and vegetable kabob. I liked the fact that the kitchen removed all skewers, but was able to maintain the clean, straight line of a skewer.

Service: 8
Staff were friendly and very accommodating. At times, we were searching for our server. But for the most part, we were satisfied with the service.

9 rating for outdoor patio seating. The interior looked nice, but it was very loud. We were sitting at one of the few tables without an umbrella. Shortly after our entrees were served, it started to lightly rain. We tried to wait it out, but then we had this grand idea of picking up our table and carrying it to an area underneath the building's awning. It was perfect, quite honestly. There was a nice bench along the building under the awning and we pulled the table up to the bench, pulled up two chairs for Jen and Rosie, and completed our dinner there. It was such a great idea that another table of quickly followed and set up their table next to us!

Food Quality: 7
Enjoyed the fried green tomatoes and homemade blue cheese potato chips. Rosie ordered the scallops - 7, Jen ordered the blackened shrimp relish salad - 7, and I had the fried catfish w/cole slaw and hush puppies. The catfish was good and cole slaw was some of the best I've ever had. Desserts were delicious, we ordered the krispy kreme banana pudding, white chocolate banana pudding and fried peach pie!

Elizabeth enjoyed her Asian salad and Greg liked his philly wrap (served w/kettle chips). My caesar salad was average, however, I liked the freshly grilled chicken breast that came with the chix caesar. I would have expected this place to use the frozen pre-grilled fajita chicken.

Service: 5
It took awhile for someone to wait on us. But the young server who finally approached our table warmed up by the middle of service.

Garlic bread served w/spicy tomato sauce and goat cheese was very good, although garlic bread tasted as if it was just covered w/garlic.
Potato cakes were very good.
Tenderloin and beef skewers were delicious and cooked just right. Only disappointment was the special, the crab empanadas. All of the other tapas that we ordered were very well received by the table.

Ambiance: 3, crowded restaurant, tight seating, restrooms were in the ballroom where they were having a wedding reception. The building was old and outdated.

Food Quality: 5
We only ordered desserts here. Chocolate torte covered w/raspberry sauce was the favorite at the table. Hot pretzel drizzled w/chocolate sauce was not very good. Elizabeth ordered raspberry sorbet - I can't imagine that you can mess that up.

Service: 3
Service was adequate once a server came to the table, but they were very unfriendly.

3rd Stop - Bazbeaux

Ambiance: 5
Patio, clean restrooms, what you'd expect of pizzeria

Food Quality: 6
1/2 pepperoni pizza and 1/2 quatro cheese pizza. Pepperoni pizza was pretty good; they spared no expense on the cheese. I didn't try the quatro cheese pizza, but others said it was more like a quiche and wasn't as good as the pizza. The food was average at best. Garlic bread lacked garlic - it's better described as buttered toast served with cold marinara sauce.

Service: 8
No issues. We were low maintenance, so it's hard to rate.

Jeffrey loved his meatball appetizer and spinach/ricotta ravioli covered w/meat sauce. I started with beef carpaccio, settled in with tomato sauce gnocchi and finished w/the panna cotta topped w/strawberries. Panna cotta was delicious - creamy, yet guilt-free (so I like to think!).

Outdoor deck seating has potential, but is nearly on top of West Paces Ferry. Indoor was built with beautiful hardwood floors, but the restaurant reeked of a bad seafood odor. Acoustics were awful; we couldn't hear each other at a small table. We had to yell across table. The brown paper used to cover the top of the dining table emitted an unpleasant odor.

Food Quality: 7
The Chilled Seafood Tower was very good. Raw oysters, chilled mussels, peel 'n eat shrimp, lobster, and crabmeat served atop crushed ice for $35. Crab and corn hush puppies w/curry-based sauce were tasty. Good drink menu.

Service: 3
Our server was adequate; she was pleasant enough and checked in occasionally throughout service. However, we had poor experiences with two other servers in the restaurant.
One server at the next table dropped silverware on our table, causing a loud crashing sound when the silverware hit our table and then fell to the floor in a room that amplified the noise due to the bad acoustics. The server didn't bother apologizing.

The 2nd server brought food to our table, didn't say a word and didn't even break a smile. She appeared annoyed for whatever reason. She reminded me of Rosalie from the Twilight movie.

We went to Harry and Sons to meet Tim and Janice after a long day of volleyball. When we walked in, we saw Tema and Brian sitting at a table in the back part of the restaurant (yes, this is the same Tema and Brian with whom we had dinner just the night before!) We crashed their date night and kinda invited ourselves (along with two other friends, Tim & Janice, whom they didn't know) to join them and moved to a larger table. What a coincidence!

Parish features exposed brick walls with a semi-demo'd sheet rock design. It's a casual restaurant that does a nice job creating a farmhouse environment. Enjoyed the unplugged live music, but it was too loud to comfortably converse at the table.

Food Quality: 5
Brian loved his creole frites, served w/red pepper sauce and worcestershire sauce. Tema and I both enjoyed our milk and honey salad - very nice. My buttermilk fried chicken was average, served w/grits and pickled veggies. Greg enjoyed his catfish stuffed w/crawfish and crab. Brian's pea and carrot ravioli portion was too small for my liking (of course), but he said it was very good. The menu selection was limited and I wasn't too impressed with many of the ingredients in the dishes.

Shrimp and grits w/spicy tomato sauce was nicely done.
Michelle's skatewing dish was salty all around.
Amy's lamb dish w/mashed potatoes was good.
Loved the dessert options...all served as mini-plates. Bread pudding was delicious...one of the best ever; carrot cake was also amongst the top! We also had fudge cake w/chocolate orange ice cream.

Service: 8
Attentive, kept drinks refilled, but lacked warm personality.

This was exactly what we were looking for on a night like this. Our table was outside on the patio, overlooking the water. We had perfect temperatures with a cool breeze. Does it get any better than this to watch fireworks?! Casual, fun environment. Busy bar. Great music in the background. Fireworks were displayed from 7 different locations...amazing!

Food Quality: 8
For starters, delicious biscuits served with honey butter was a fantastic way to start the dinner service!
Steak Calamari with two sauces- preferred sweet chutney were good
Hushpuppies stuffed w/shrimp, lobster, corn and chive chowder atop sauce were wonderful.
Mussels were bland.
Crabmeat bruschetta - light, healthy, crabmeat was plentiful (only average for me, but everyone else loved it).
For entrees, I ordered the pan-roasted honey ginger scallops - absolutely delicious. A wonderful blend of flavors. Side of cole slaw - fresh, light yet flavorful.
Greg's chargrilled tuna was not very good; it was too charred, but the grits (made w/buttermilk and heavy cream) were truly divine!
Rosie's lemon dill butter shrimp was good - nice combination of flavors.
We all split the white chocolate bread pudding - it was disappointing; texture was more like cornbread and lacked moistness. Flavors were muted, although the creme anglaise was good.

Service: 10
Our server, Ish, was knowledgeable, patient, did a thorough yet concise job highlighting top items on the menu. Service throughout dinner didn't miss a beat. He even cleared the bar crowd when the fireworks started, explaining that we reserved tables. Ish did an awesome job managing crowd.

Great menu, daily change, interesting combinations and use of ingredients; but not over-the-top mouth watering; I would describe their food as something between the clean/freshness of AquaKnox and the richness of foods that I generally like (but shouldn't be eating)!

Price: Expensive.
$110 for my 5-course meal and 1 or 2 glasses of wine
Included steelhead, duck, cheese plate, grapefruit dessert and one other item which I couldn't remember. Yea, I'm sure Kristin and Becky could've shot me when I ordered the 5-course meal!

For several years, I've heard friends rave about this place. Granted, it's located in a central area and convenient to in-towners. However, I can't understand all the hype around this restaurant. To me, it's really not much different than Ru San's in Buckhead. Ru San's isn't bad...it's just that I don't constantly hear people calling Ru San's the best sushi in town, which is what I heard about M F.

8 Overall Rating - Trois 05/02/08

We dined with Charles (my former co-worker from the Birmingham Marriott) and his wife, Heather.

I guess I need to hurry up and post my notes quickly because some of these places are no longer in business. Unfortunately, Trois is one of them; judging from my Google search, it closed recently.

The food was very good; the menu was limited.

The decor was beautiful, modeled after the photos we often see of Greece. The interior was clean, painted in bright white and accented with long, flowing sheer curtains throughout the restaurant.

I enjoyed the complimentary gazpacho, chocolate and champagne (of course, any free food or drinks usually get my vote)!

This restaurant would have received a 9 rating, ranked right up there with my all-time favorite (BluePointe), had it not been for the horrible bathroom experience after dinner.

First of all, the restrooms are inconveniently located on a floor separate from the main dining area. Secondly, I hate unisex restrooms and "these" were just that.

Next, I opened three restroom doors before I found one with a toilet that wasn't overflowing.

Finally, the last straw, it took me at least 10 minutes to find the stupid flush button on the toilets. It's no wonder that the other toilets weren't flushed....no one could figure out how to flush those ridiculous things! There was even a sign posted on the restroom door expaining where the flush button was located, but even then it still took great effort to locate the button.

So you may be asking yourself, "Where in the world was the flush button?" Well, it was located on the toilet bowl below the toilet seat. The button was flush with the bowl...hard to see. I'm sure some designer thought this sleek look would be a big hit in a trendy restaurant...but this is a perfect example when design just doesn't outweigh function. It probably continued to be a disaster for the restaurant. Although we had a great dining experience, we never returned.

No Rating - Cho Won Buffet

I was in search of a good Korean BBQ restaurant after my Korean sister-in-law introduced us to this unique cuisine and fun experience while she and my brother were staying with us. This place was recommended by Yung when I was getting a manicure at Julio Cesar's Salon & Spa.

As the name implies, it is a buffet restaurant...so you know how that goes, but it's a great value. The food was quite good. This place stays busy, so I take that as a good sign. The place is a little dirty.

An average experience.
The lighting in the restaurant was too bright and it was very loud, making conversation difficult.

We've been back to this restaurant two other times. Each time we've dined here, the service was poor. They always seem to have plenty of servers scheduled, but they tend to be more interested in socializing than taking care of their tables.

6 Overall Rating - Seasons 52 2006/2007

I don't recall the food standing out. I like what they're trying to achieve - healthy eating, reduced calories, great environment, good wine list, consistent food quality; however, I just don't find their food to be that good. I do have to give them some credit though...it's here where I first saw the small, dessert shooters so I give them a bonus point for that. That's one of the best ideas yet!

6 Overall Rating - Wildfire 12/01/06

I liked the ambiance in the bar, but the main dining area in the restaurant was too bright. Their food was good, but nothing over the top. One big disappointment - they 86'd french fries!
